A unique look at life behind the Berlin Wall – based on true facts. Written by Wanne Synnave and Sam Verhoeven.

Brief content

“November ’89” is set in West Berlin during the days before the fall of the wall. Along both sides of the wall, there is growing awareness that something might be moving, and several associations are stepping up pressure on the German Democratic Republic regime to open the borders. Helene gathers information for one of these associations and rings Arend Holtz’s doorbell. He fled East Berlin in those turbulent days after the wall was erected. She wants to hear his story to have ammunition to tear down the wall. But as Arend tells his painful story, it becomes clear that Helene has another reason to hear everything from back then.

“November ’89” premiered exactly 30 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall at Antwerp’s Zuiderpershuis in November 2019. The performance was very well received and starred Maike Boerdam, Aaron Blommaert and Sébastien De Smet.

The press about November ’89

“There are some wonderful songs in this piece. We recognize the music almost immediately as Sam Verhoeven compositions and that in itself is reason enough to go and see and listen.”
